Centre Michel Vieuchange helps children, teenagers, and adults build practical language skills through local learning centers in Smara, Laâyoune, and Assa. We welcome volunteers, educational partners, and community-minded collaborators who want to support language learning where access matters.
Centre Michel Vieuchange privé / Association Michel Vieuchange pour les langues et développement des compétences began in Smara and has grown into a language education project serving learners across southern Morocco.
Today, C.M.V. works through centers in Smara, Laâyoune, and Assa. Across the association, more than 800 students take part in language learning designed to be practical, affordable, and connected to real communication.
Our work is locally recognized, carried out in coordination with local authorities, and strengthened by local teachers, administrative staff, volunteers, and developing educational partnerships.
C.M.V. offers English, French, and Spanish courses for children, teenagers, and adults. Courses support learners from beginner to intermediate levels, with a focus on regular practice, confidence, and communication.
C.M.V. serves learners through centers in Smara, Laâyoune, and Assa. Each center reflects the needs of its local community while remaining part of one shared educational mission.
The Assa center is currently welcoming volunteers who can commit one month or more and are ready for a simple, community-centered experience in southern Morocco. Volunteers may assist local teachers, lead language activities, support classes, or help with broader school needs depending on experience and current priorities.
Assa is calm, traditional, remote, and not a tourist destination. The experience is best suited for people who value patience, cultural respect, and meaningful service over comfort or convenience.
C.M.V. welcomes conversations with schools, universities, NGOs, language institutes, cultural organizations, volunteer organizations, civic groups, funders, and aligned institutions.
We are especially interested in education and curriculum collaboration, adult student visits and exchanges, and practical projects that support language learning in southern Morocco.
This was, without question, one of the most meaningful volunteering experiences of my life. From the very first day, I was met with an extraordinary sense of welcome. The staff, the students and Lahcen's family all made me feel immediately at home; not in a superficial or polite way, but in the truest sense of belonging to a shared mission.
Lahcen is open, kind, generous and deeply present. He was always available for support, while also trusting volunteers with real responsibility.
At the centre, I taught German and helped with Spanish and English classes. The students themselves were remarkable: motivated, curious and engaged. Teaching them never felt like an obligation, but an honor.Life in the house reflected the same care and respect. It was clean, functional and well organised. Meals were consistently delicious, but even more memorable was the warmth and humanity of Lahcen's family. Their generosity went far beyond hospitality; it was a quiet, everyday kindness that will forever stay with me.
Another highlight was the atmosphere among volunteers. It is rare to find an environment where connection happens so easily and sincerely.One gesture that deeply moved me was Lahcen taking the time, even after long and tiring work days, to teach us Arabic in the evenings. This was offered not as a formality, but as a genuine desire to share knowledge. It is an opportunity I will forever be grateful for.
Lastly, and most importantly, you are never made to feel like an outsider here. You are involved in daily life, decisions and activities in a way that allows for real learning and exchange. This experience offers a valuable window into the history, practices and worldviews of Sahrawi communities, but also into the unique life stories and psychologies of each person you'll meet.

It is truly heartening to find such initiatives in remote areas and challenging socio-economic conditions like those of Assa. This year, we witnessed a vibrant example of cultural exchange and the sharing of ideas. We learned and benefited greatly, and our English communication skills improved significantly. We deeply appreciate this initiative and thank the Director of the Language Center Mr Lahcen and his administrative staff, as well as Ms. Aziza and all the volunteers from various countries with whom we shared wonderful moments. Our thanks also extend to all the amazing students. May you always be dedicated to serving the community.

General Update
The Michel Vieuchange Association for Languages and Skills Development, represented by its educational and administrative team, along with teachers and volunteers from the United States, Mexico, Spain, and Japan, made an official visit to the Provincial Council of Assa-Zag.
Announcement
As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen community work and serve people across Assa, a partnership and twinning agreement has been signed between the Michel Vieuchange Association for Languages and Skills Development and the Al Wahda Association for Persons with Disabilities in Assa.
