Volunteer placement

Volunteer in Assa

C.M.V. is currently welcoming volunteers for the Assa center in southern Morocco. This opportunity is for people who want to support language education, live simply, and take part in a calm local community with respect and patience.

The Assa placement is best suited for volunteers who can commit one month or more and who are comfortable with rural life, shared responsibilities, and evening teaching or support hours.

Volunteers at Dinner

Assa for launch

Assa placement overview

Assa is the active volunteer placement for launch. It is a calm, traditional, remote town in southern Morocco. It is not a tourist destination, which is part of what makes the experience meaningful for the right person.

Volunteers in Assa support a local language center where students are motivated to learn English, French, and Spanish. The experience can include classroom work, cultural exchange, community life, and practical support for the center.

Volunteer opportunities may expand or change in the future as C.M.V.’s needs develop.

Possible roles

Volunteer roles

Volunteer roles depend on current needs, language ability, and experience. A volunteer may help with:

  • Assisting local teachers in the classroom.
  • Leading language activities or classes when appropriate.
  • Supporting English, French, or Spanish learning.
  • Helping students practice conversation.
  • Supporting simple organizational or activity needs.

Teaching experience is appreciated, but motivation, patience, kindness, and respect for the local community are also important.

Support provided

What is provided

C.M.V. provides:

  • Shared housing.
  • Two meals per day.
  • Local support from the center.
  • A reference after a completed volunteer stay, when appropriate.
  • A chance to take part in meaningful language education in a local community.

Rooms are generally shared with volunteers of the same gender. Couples may apply, and the organization does its best to accommodate them when possible.

Before applying

Commitment expectations

Before applying, please make sure these expectations fit your situation.

  • A stay of one month or more is expected or strongly preferred.
  • Volunteers should expect about 18 evening hours per week of teaching or center support.
  • The school is closed during July and August.
  • Volunteers share daily responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning.
  • Shared rooms are part of the accommodation arrangement.
  • No pets are allowed.
  • Assa is remote and simple. Some conveniences may not be readily available.
  • Volunteers should be ready for a traditional local environment and respectful community life.

Living context

Living context

Life in Assa is simple, calm, and community-centered. Volunteers should not expect a tourist city or a high-comfort placement. The experience is closer to daily local life in southern Morocco.

This can be rewarding for volunteers who want human connection, cultural humility, and a slower rhythm. It may not be the right fit for people who need nightlife, private housing, frequent travel options, or a highly developed urban environment.

Fit requirements

Who should apply

This opportunity may be a good fit if you:

  • Can commit one month or more.
  • Are interested in language education.
  • Can support English, French, or Spanish learning.
  • Are patient with children, teenagers, or adult learners.
  • Respect traditional community life.
  • Are comfortable sharing space and responsibilities.
  • Can adapt to a rural environment.
  • Want a meaningful placement rather than a tourist experience.

Closure note

July/August closure

C.M.V. is closed during July and August. Volunteer dates should be planned outside this closure period unless the center has specifically confirmed another arrangement.

Travel responsibility

Visa and passport responsibility

Volunteers are responsible for researching entry, visa, passport, and stay requirements for their own nationality and travel situation. C.M.V. cannot sponsor visas.

Volunteer experience

Optional testimonial

“I've just spent three weeks in Assa and took part in the opening of the language center as a teaching assistant in a French class. It's been a truly enriching and inspiring experience. Assa is medium-sized city close to the desert surrounded by a chain of rocky mountains. I hardly saw any Westerners outside our group: this is an authentic Moroccan experience. Locals were welcoming and very benevolent towards us. The house -quite a thing in itself- is conveniently located very close to the school with great views over the surrounding landscape (mosque and mountains). The school has just been renovated and boasts state-of-the-art facilities (modern electronic boards with access to Internet). I was lucky to meet and connect with really nice and genuine people (other volunteers) from all over the world. I felt truly integrated within the group in a way I had not felt for a long time in a group of people. The teachers too were very warm and open and a pleasure to work with. Special thanks to Ouma and her family who invited us for Iftar and Fatma with whom I had great pleasure in working so smoothly. A big shout out to Lahcen, the actual host, who worked really hard to make the experience worthwhile for us volunteers (while of course being involved in launching the whole project). It really paid off: the opening of the school was a real success and I am glad to have been part of it and brought my modest contribution to it. Thanks for the regular outings in the desert camp located outside Assa in a breathtaking lunar reddish landscape . Those times under the tent were really special (facilitated by great hosts Abdou and Selim). There are also really nice walks to do just outside the city where the old city can be found located on a steep hill with breathtaking views over the whole city, its many mosques and the oued at the bottom (the Draa) and its lush green gardens and palm trees. I took many photos. Last but not least, let's not forget the kids who were our primary reason for being there. Mine ranged from eight to fourteen years old and they were all so endearing, each in their own way. A lot of them were very engaged and enthusiastic, some a bit more withdrawn and less confident but being in contact with all of them was such a fulfilling experience! I was only able to take part for three weeks , -I have an office job-, and this is by far the best holiday experience I have had in a very long time (and my best workaway experience overall). I would gladly have stayed on longer if possible and I look forward to being back there as soon as possible. I warmly and heartily recommend Lahcen and his project to anybody thinking about joining it.”
